LD Lines to introduce new Dover - Boulogne ferry service for July 1st 2009.
LD Lines have announced a new freight and passenger service from Dover to the French port of Boulogne that will start in July 2009 and using the new `Ro Ro' terminal at the port of Boulogne.
Freight as well as tourist traffic; coaches, car and additionally foot passengers, will be able to travel on the new route that promises a 1 hour 45 minutes crossing from the port that is usually associated with the French city of Calais.
The company have announced that there will be four return sailings per day and will start out on the ship "Norman Spirit", which can transport up to 1850 passengers, 700 cars and 110 lorries and LD Lines hope to carry approximately 120,000 lorries, 130,000 cars and 300,000 passengers in the first year, providing a foundation on which will hopefully allow for more growth.
President of the Boulogne Chamber of Commerce, Francis Leroy, said: "This represents a significant development for the future of the Port of Boulogne and confirms our determination to regenerate the Port's activities by becoming a major player particularly in the ever-increasing cross channel freight market. The new Ro Ro terminal and the introduction of LD Lines new cross channel service from Dover is expected to create 150 new jobs with the majority being in the Port of Boulogne."
Christophe Santoni, Directeur Général of LD Lines, also commented: "The company's arrival to the short sea cross channel market is a major expansion for LD Lines and operating to the new Boulogne Hub-Port presents excellent commercial potential."
