Lorry drivers saving planet with sea trips
Hauliers using the ferry from Scotland to Belgium are saving the environment from £2.9 million worth of damage every year, according to a new report.
Scottish Enterprise Fife's evaluation of the Superfast service between Rosyth and Zeebrugge found that the route has stimulated a change in the way the Scottish freight market operates.
Before the introduction of the service, all Scottish lorries moving freight between Scotland and mainland Europe were required to travel via ports in England - clocking up thousands of miles and spewing more harmful emissions into the environment.
The report concluded that the haulage industry has benefited from the ferry route, most significantly in terms of the flexibility it offers and the time savings to be made.
The study also said that 80 per cent of Scotland's businesses are located within 90 minutes of the port of Rosyth, enabling providers to offer express deliveries to cities such as Edinburgh.
