People with a liking for unusual creatures from around the world will be able to indulge their interest if they take cheap ferries to the Isle of Wight this year.
Isle of Wight Zoo has recently taken delivery of a pair of Madagascan jumping rats, which are equivalent in size to an ordinary pet rabbit.
The new arrivals at the zoo are part of a small population of this critically endangered species which are held at 16 zoos across the world.
Isle of Wight Zoo could be the site of an important ecological project as it attempts to breed the two jumping rats to help save the species from extinction.
It is feared that, without help from scientists and zoos, the Madagascan jumping rat could be extinct in less than 25 years.
People planning to make ferry crossings to the Isle of Wight which are available with Red Funnel and Wightlink from Portsmouth, Southampton and Lymington can find the zoo on Yaverland seafront in Sandown.
The attraction is best known for its exotic cats, but is also home to lemurs, monkeys, spiders, snakes and insects.
