Majorcan town to celebrate patron saint | | | | 13 August 2008 | The town of Felanitx on the Balearic island of Majorca will this month hold its annual celebrations of the patron saint of San Agustin.
Holidaymakers can catch ferry crossings to the island from mainland Spain and witness the festival first hand between August 22nd and August 30th.
The official opening proclamation will be made on the Friday, giving way to a week of cultural activities, concerts, street band performances, sporting events and games.
One of the highlights of the festival is Els Cavallets, a series of ritual dances that traces its history back to the founding of the convent of San Agustin in 1603.
The performances involve six children between the ages of ten and 13 who dance around a woman dressed in a costume designed to resemble a pony, all to the accompaniment of bagpipes, flutes and drums.
Felanitx is situated in south-east Majorca about 48km from the port and capital city of Palma.
Palma is accessible via ferry crossings from Barcelona, Denia and Valencia, provided by Balearia, Iscomar and Trasmediterranea. |
