An expert on environmentally friendly travel has highlighted the benefits on offer to people who make their way to a destination by ferry.
Richard Hammond, chief executive and founder of greentraveller.co.uk, pointed out that longer crossings, such as
Brittany Ferries' services from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander in northern Spain, provide the option to sit down, relax and enjoy the journey.
He also said that the old-fashioned idea of ferries being uncomfortable and offering a limited range of amenities is no longer accurate.
"Nowadays they are much more comfortable, they've got fantastic services and they are much more like a hotel than just standing in an old pitch-and-roll ferry," Mr Hammond commented.
The expert also highlighted the environmental benefits of travelling by sea, saying that taking a bus or train to the port and catching a ferry to Europe is probably the greenest way to get to the continent from the UK.
Travellers can take
ferries to France with operators such as
SeaFrance,
LD Lines and
Norfolkline, while those heading to the Netherlands can take
ferries from Harwich to Hook of Holland with
Stena Line.
