New CalMac Chairman takes up post

Lifeline ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne has a new Chairman. Peter Timms takes up his duties today (Tuesday, 1 August 2006), having served as a non-executive director of the company since 2000. He lives on the Isle of Bute and has been Chairman and Managing Director of Flexible Technology Limited, a company based in Rothesay, since 1981.

Mr Timms succeeds Dr Harold Mills whose tenure ended yesterday, and will take over for a term of three years from 1 August 2006 until 31 July 2009.

Speaking as he took over, on the day after the Scottish Executive issued an Invitation to Tender to CalMac and two other companies potentially bidding for the Gourock to Dunoon service, Mr Timms said: "These are difficult times for the company, but I am sure that the experience I have already gained over the last six years in CalMac, together with our achievement in winning the bid to operate the Northern Isles services, will be extremely helpful in meeting the challenges that lie ahead."

"I have every confidence in the ability of all our staff to meet these new demands and to embrace the changes needed. I know too that we enjoy considerable support within the network of islands we serve and well beyond. It is for the whole company to work together to mount robust bids for the tenders we will submit for our own services".

Peter Timms previously worked at senior management level with AFA-Minerva (Thorn-EMI) Ltd in London and with IBM (UK) Ltd in Greenock. He is a former member of Highland and Islands Enterprise Board, retiring from that position in 1998. He is a member of the Board of Argyll & the Islands Enterprise and is a former member of the Scottish Industrial Development Advisory Board. He was first appointed to the CalMac Board in July 2000 and re-appointed in July 2003: his current remuneration as a board member is £7,034. Mr Timms does not hold any other Ministerial appointments.

The post of Chair of CalMac is part-time (1 1/2 days per week) and currently attracts a remuneration of £25,937, which is subject to annual review
