New Isle of Wight skate park proves a hit

New Isle of Wight skate park proves a hit
28 August 2008
Skateboarding is proving a popular pastime on the Isle of Wight
Families planning ferry crossings to the Isle of Wight may be interested to hear of the successful opening of a new skate park that could keep kids entertained for hours.

The £60,000 park for skateboarders and rollerbladers has been packed with local youngsters during the school holidays, the Isle of Wight Country Press reports.

Named the Fort, the area opened at Sandham Gardens on the Sandown seafront three weeks ago.

It is the first phase of a local development project that could lead to more attractions for youngsters enjoying holidays on the Isle of Wight, including a multi-purpose sports facility for football and basketball.

Councillor Val Stephenson, who pursued the idea of opening the skate park, said: "It is a wonderful facility that has been welcomed by the young people of Sandown. It always gets 25 or more on it and is already extremely popular. The kids love it — they are as happy as Larry.

"I have wanted a skate park here for the past six years and was determined to see it open."

Cheap ferries to the Isle of Wight are provided by Red Funnel and Wightlink and connect Lymington, Southampton and Portsmouth with Yarmouth, Cowes, Fisbourne and Ryde.
