Work on Manannan, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company's new ferry, is progressing well ahead of this year's TT motorcycle racing event, the operator has revealed.
The company said that the introduction of the ship will allow it to be "self-sufficient" for the 2009 TT competition, with a fleet that will not include any charter passenger vessels.
Viking, another Steam Packet Company ferry, is being made ready for service to ensure that there is enough capacity for this year's TT event, which is anticipating a five per cent increase in visitor numbers.
Mark Woodward, chief executive of the ferry operator, said: "Work on Manannan is progressing well as she goes through the final stages of her fitting-out.
"As the largest conversion of an aluminium vessel anywhere in the world, we are all looking forward to her arrival in Douglas harbour before she commences service in the run up to the TT period."
People planning to see the TT races this year can catch Isle of Man ferries from the ports of Liverpool and Heysham with the Steam Packet Company.
The operator also provides ferries to Dublin and Belfast from its home port of Douglas.
