A new fleet of
Wightlink ferries is on track to arrive in the south of England at the end of the summer, it has been reported.
With the ferry company investing millions in upgrading its cross-Solent services, it has been confirmed that its new generation of FastCats is now on the way, having been built in the Philippines.
The new ferries set off from the region of Cebu in the Pacific Ocean nation on the back of a massive freighter ship around a fortnight ago, with the journey to the UK expected to take around five weeks.
As a result, everything is on track for them to enter service of
Wightlink's
Portsmouth to Ryde ferry route on September 21st, the Isle of Wight County Press has reported.
Commenting, John Burrows,
Wightlink operations general manager, told the news provider: "The arrival of Wight Ryders 1 and 2 means we are on schedule to replace our existing FastCat fleet with a robust new generation of purpose-built, single-decked catamarans, by early autumn."
Meanwhile, work is still continuing on the construction of several new berths at Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde Pier in order to accommodate the new vessels, with the existing cheap ferries due to be gradually phased out from the start of October.
