Following recent speculation about the arrival of a new ferry operator at Portsmouth Commercial Port, port managers and Portsmouth City Council are delighted to confirm that the Spanish short sea shipping line, Acciona Trasmediterranea, will commence operations from the City to the port of Bilbao commencing 18 May.
Commenting on the announcement, port manager Martin Putman said: "We're delighted to welcome Acciona Trasmediterranea to Portsmouth. With a focus on providing a better service for freight to and from Spain, this new service will extend our offering providing different opportunities for both freight and passenger customers."
The ship servicing the route to Bilbao is the 172 metre MV Fortuny, a modern superferry built in 2001. It has capacity for up to 1,000 passengers and 330 vehicles. Facilities include a cinema, disco, gymnasium, swimming pool and Jacuzzi, as well as a dedicated children's crèche and play area plus a choice of bars, restaurants and cafes. The Drivers Club has a self-service bar plus a separate lounge offering TV and video games for drivers only. The ship also facilitates pets, with kennels and dedicated area for walks. In line with its parent company's policy for development and sustainability, the Fortuny superferry was recently fitted with advanced, state of the art propellers that drastically reduce energy consumption and air pollution.
Two sailings per week are scheduled during the off-peak season (between 16 May and 29 June and between 22 September and 31 December), with an additional weekly sailing added during high season (30 June to 21 September).
As Spain's leading ship-owning company for both cargo and passengers, Acciona Trasmediterranea services routes between the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Ceuta and Melilla. Its international traffic continues to expand and as well as Portsmouth to Bilbao, it also includes Morocco, Tangiers and Nador, Algeria, and St Nazaire, France.
Portsmouth City Council's Executive Member for Planning, Regeneration and Economic Development, Mike Hancock, said that this announcement reflects ongoing developments by the City and port mangers to ensure that Portsmouth continues to offer a level of choice and quality expected of Britain's best-connected ferry port. He said: "The Port's location and infrastructure together with substantial investment by the City Council over recent years, has resulted in modern and flexible facilities attracting ferry operators and passengers alike. We welcome Acciona Trasmediterranea to Portsmouth and will continue to support Port management in attracting new business to the City that will strengthen the local economy."
