New five-star attraction for Scotland ferry visitors

Ferry breaks in Scotland this year will offer holidaymakers the opportunity to visit a new five-star attraction – the Culloden battlefield in the Highlands.

VisitScotland chairman Peter Lederer made an appearance at the new visitor centre at Culloden recently to hand over an award celebrating the site's status as a five-star tourist attraction.

The battlefield was recently restored as part of one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by the National Trust for Scotland, which also included a £9.5 million redevelopment of the visitor centre.

Property manager Deirdre Smyth said: "This award is confirmation of the high quality experience that we offer at Culloden and we are proud to represent an event which was so significant in Scottish history to such a high standard.

"Culloden is becoming a must-visit destination for visitors from across Scotland and beyond and we look forward to welcoming many thousands more."

Tourists in Belgium will be offered more access to Scotland from May this year when Norfolkline launches its new ferry crossing from Rosyth to Zeebrugge, while people from Northern Ireland can sail from Belfast to Stranraer with Stena Line.

After heading to the Highlands to visit Culloden, holidaymakers can continue their journey by sailing with Pentland Ferries from Aberdeen or Scrabster to the islands north of Scotland.
