New spider monkey born at Isle of Wight Zoo | | | | 15 October 2008 | People planning ferry crossings to the Isle of Wight over the coming weeks will be able to pay a visit to the island's zoo to see the newest addition to its primate population.
A baby female spider monkey was born in the zoo on September 30th and joined the zoo's existing troop of South American monkeys.
Animal lovers hoping to see the new-born creature will have to arrange their Isle of Wight trips soon, as the zoo closes at the end of October.
The new monkey's mother, Ella, was a mature first-time mum at the age of 26 but has taken to parenthood well and nurtured her new-born baby safely through the critical first ten days of her life.
During her first five months, the baby will be carried around by her mother before her father takes on some parenting duties later in the youngster's life. By springtime next year, when the zoo will reopen, the baby is expected to be highly mobile and playful.
While the monkeys are a popular attraction, one of the main reasons people taking ferries to the Isle of Wight visit the island's zoo is to see its range of exotic cats, which in the past has included tigers, lions, leopards, cheetahs and pumas. |
