The Daily Telegraph has released a guide to the best budget travel options for 2009, with ferry trips to northern France among the recommendations for holidaymakers with an eye on their finances.
According to the newspaper, it is "a fairly safe bet" that financial concerns will dominate travel plans for many people this year.
Telegraph travel writer Nick Trend points out that ferry fares to northern France have "fallen sharply" recently, meaning that this part of the country could begin to rival the perennially popular south in 2009.
While the pound is still weak against the euro, it is possible to find accommodation and restaurants in northern France that offer prices close to those in Britain, according to the holiday guide.
The most appealing aspects of this region are its natural attributes, such as the beaches along the coast of Normandy or to the south of Brittany and the secluded coves west of St Malo.
Brittany Ferries is the leading provider of ferry services to north-west France, with regular crossings to Roscoff and St Malo, while the ports of Cherbourg, Le Havre and Dieppe in Normandy are served by
Brittany Ferries and LD Lines.
