The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has released figures showing that more than 200,000 people will catch cross-Channel ferries or travel under the Channel on
Eurotunnel services this Christmas.
A further 210,000 are expected to head to the continent by Eurostar, according to the association.
Abta predicts that more than three million holidaymakers will head overseas between December 20th and January 1st this year to escape the British winter.
The 2008-09 Christmas holiday season is expected to be just as, if not more, important to British people as in previous years, regardless of the economic downturn.
Abta president Justin Fleming said: "Holidays especially at this time of year are considered to be so much more than a luxury. They provide a valuable time to unwind and spend quality time with family."
While winter sports holidays are set to be popular over Christmas and New Year, destinations offering a guarantee of good weather will be the first choice for the majority of travellers, according to Abta.
The ferry ports of Dublin and Amsterdam are also expected to welcome plenty of tourists, many of whom will be visiting to celebrate New Year's Eve.
