Close to two million people will be on the move between today and Christmas Eve as the festive season rush got into full swing yesterday.
More than one million private vehicles will be on the roads each day in the lead-up to Christmas Eve, according to the Automobile Association.
The mass Christmas exodus from Dublin began in earnest yesterday with huge volumes of westbound traffic throughout the day, particularly on the M7 and N7.
Traffic is expected to be busy over the weekend and to peak on Christmas eve.
About one million people will be travelling by air, rail, sea and bus over the same period, with an estimated 220,000 people scheduled to fly in and out of Dublin Airport between yesterday and Monday.
Sea crossings on both
Irish Ferries and Stena Line are booked almost to capacity as thousands of passengers travel home to the UK and the continent.
For the first time, the 1,500-capacity Oscar Wilde was full as she left Rosslare Harbour yesterday on the last pre-Christmas crossing bound for Cherbourg, carrying a huge contingent of Polish people and other eastern europeans heading home for Christmas.
"There is a changing trend here. It used to be full with Irish people coming back home for Christmas, but now the outward legs are just as choc-a-bloc with eastern europeans going home," said
Irish Ferries spokesman Dan Hall.
The Ulysses, the largest-capacity ferry in the world, will be carrying about 2,000 people twice a day between Holyhead and Dublin and bookings are also "buoyant" on other sailings, he said.
Iarnrod Eireann is also expecting huge numbers of people to be travelling between Dublin and the rest of the country over the coming days, with an estimated 500,000 people travelling by Intercity trains between yesterday and New Year's Day.
