P&O Ferries has encouraged Britons to rediscover the car as something that offers freedom and independence rather than simply a cause of pollution and congestion.
Writing in his P&O Ferries blog, John Hillman claims that motoring holidays are not as popular as they once were as many British people now associate the car with driving to work.
Despite the fact that driving now has some negative connotations, Mr Hillman urged British car owners to remember a time when the vehicle represented "a new age of adventure".
P&O Ferries began operating in the 1960s, when motoring was becoming increasingly popular in the UK, and therefore claims to represent the "romantic values" that the car once symbolised.
Today, the company provides travellers with the opportunity to get behind the wheel of their vehicle and explore Europe via its ferries to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge from Hull and its Dover to Calais ferry route.
Those looking for a real adventure can catch ferries to Bilbao from Portsmouth and set off on an exploration of the Iberian peninsula.
