P&O Ferries has encouraged shoppers to take advantage of the winter sales that will be running in France over the next five weeks.
The French government announced that the first state-decreed sale period of the year began yesterday (January 6th).
During the five-week season, discounts of between 50 and 70 per cent will be available and shopkeepers will be under strict regulations regarding what they describe as 'sale stock'.
People planning to take ferries to France were advised to look out for 'solde' signs in shops, or tags reading 'degriffe' or 'remise' followed by an amount, which denotes a price mark-down.
Sarah Staughton, head of marketing at P&O Ferries, said: "I believe a Frenchman stated that we are a nation of shopkeepers, but I think France can teach us a thing or two when it comes to the sales.
"If, like me, you're sceptical of the incessant sales signs in UK shops, give 'les soldes' a go. But don't leave it too late. And don't be afraid to use your elbows!"
P&O Ferries offers regular daily crossings on the
Dover to Calais ferry route, which is also served by
Seafrance.
Other travel options include
LD Lines' ferries to Le Havre from Portsmouth and the Dover to Dunkerque ferry service provided by
Norfolkline.
