P&O Ferries has announced plans to launch a freight service on the Dover to Zeebrugge ferry link, a route it has not served since 2002.
The company will deploy a freight-only vessel, the European Endeavour, on daily return crossings between the ports from April 7th.
Up to 100 articulated lorries can be carried on the ship, which will offer sailing times of four-and-a-half hours.
P&O Ferries' freight director, Ronny Daelman, said: "We are building a very strong freight hub in Zeebrugge with our existing routes to Hull, Teesport and Tilbury.
"Our customers tell us they now want a direct service to Dover from the Belgian port and we are pleased to be able to respond accordingly."
He went on to state that the service will operate as long as there is "profitable demand" from freight customers.
The company also provides a range of passenger services, with regular
ferries from Dover to Calais along with Hull to Rotterdam and Liverpool to Dublin ferry crossings.
