P&O Ferries was among the companies recognised at the European ceremony of the 2009 World Travel Awards.
The firm was named Europe's leading short sea ferry operator at the event, which was held at the Marriott Praia D'El Rey in Portugal.
P&O Ferries serves the busy
Dover to Calais ferry route and also provides ferries to Rotterdam from Hull, Dublin from Liverpool and other destinations.
It was not the only ferry company to be recognised at the World Travel Awards' European ceremony, with
DFDS Seaways voted the best long sea operator.
People planning to visit the continent can take ferries to Amsterdam from Newcastle with
DFDS Seaways or travel on its Harwich to Esbjerg ferry route.
The ferry operators were among 1,500 travel companies that were nominated in 177 categories for the event.
Graham Cooke, president of the World Travel Awards, said: "The past 12 months have brought several challenges, namely the economic downturn and the outbreak of swine flu, which has impacted travel and tourism worldwide; today's winners have remained focused on their long-term objectives and continued to deliver above and beyond the call of duty, setting an industry example."
