Passenger ferry hits oil rig
In Tyne, a 30.000-tonne passenger ferry collided with an oil platform.
DFDS Seaways passenger ferry, the King of Scandinavia, liberated from its quay, drifted across the Tyne and hit an oil platform. This happened around 1.30pm last Friday afternoon. The 60mph strong wind broke the ropes that were holding the King of Scandinavia to Northumberland Quay. The port of Tyne's spokesman confirmed they are in the process of tugging the ferry back to the north bank.
Luckily there is no significant damage to the Northern Producer's oil platform on the South bank of the Tyne.
A spokesman from Nexus ferries explained their service has not been affected by the strong wind.
John Crummie UK Managing Director for DFDS Seaways said that no passengers were on board at the time and no crew members were injured.
