Travellers planning to take ferries to Scotland this year will be "spoilt for choice" if they decide to visit Edinburgh, according to a tourism industry spokeswoman.
Sinead Feltoe, regional director of Edinburgh and East Central at VisitScotland, revealed that 2009 was a strong year for the capital, with visitor numbers at leading attractions higher between January and October than during the same period in 2008.
Edinburgh Castle, the Scotch Whisky Experience and Camera Obscura were among the leading highlights for visitors.
People based in Northern Ireland can reach Scotland by taking ferries to Stranraer from Belfast with
Stena Line, while those coming from Europe can travel on
Norfolkline's Zeebrugge to Rosyth ferry route.
Offering some inspiration, Ms Feltoe pointed out that visitors can "explore the many museums and art galleries in the new and old towns or find the perfect spot on Arthur's Seat to take in the city with its stunning views across the Forth".
She added: "If you want to go a bit further afield, Rosslyn Chapel takes you on an incredible journey into history or for more
[outdoor] adventure you have numerous championship golf courses on the doorstep and the award-winning Seabird Centre at North Berwick."
Travellers can also explore some of Scotland's islands by taking ferries to Kirkwall or Lerwick from Aberdeen with
NorthLink Ferries.
