The province of Picardy in north-east France is popular with cross channel ferry passengers and other visitors from the UK partly because it is so easy to reach, according to a local government spokesman.
Claude Chaboud, Picardy press and promotions manager for the French government tourist office, pointed out that someone driving from London can reach the region in as little as four hours.
Commenting on the particular attractions of the province, Mr Chaboud said: "Picardy has a lot to do with remembrance, with the First World War
A lot of British people come over to commemorate and look at memoirs."
He added: "Outdoor holidays are popular because we have 72 parks and gardens and people like to come and walk around
It is very nature orientated and relaxed so people who want to escape the city, they can come to Picardy."
Picardy is located north-east of Paris, making it easily accessible for people travelling on short Dover to Calais ferry crossings with Seafrance or P&O Ferries.
Other options include the LD Lines ferry crossings from Dover to Boulogne and Dieppe.
