Portsmouth ferry port has announced plans to develop a new £16 million passenger terminal.
Work on the building is expected to begin in January next year and conclude around Easter 2011.
Travellers taking ferries to Bilbao with P&O Ferries and those using the Cherbourg, Caen and St Malo ferry services provided by
Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth will benefit from the development.
Port manager Martin Putman told Portsmouth News that both P&O Ferries and
Brittany Ferries have criticised the existing facility in the past, saying that it does not reflect the quality of service available on their ships.
He added: "What we might see if we don't replace it would be our major customers deciding not to place so much traffic through here, both cruise and ferry passengers.
"They'd just take their business elsewhere. It's high time this was redeveloped and this is our opportunity."
Stephen Tuckwell, Portsmouth operations manager for
Brittany Ferries, described the announcement that a new terminal is to be built as a "most welcome development".
The investment will also prove beneficial for
LD Lines, which operates ferries to Le Havre from Portsmouth.
