Portsmouth ferry terminal project 'on schedule'

Construction of the new Portsmouth ferry terminal is currently on schedule and progressing well, port managers have revealed.

A 'turning the sod' ceremony was held at the new terminal site earlier this month to mark the beginning of the next phase of construction, which will see concrete foundations inserted into the ground.

The building will cover 2,700 square metres of land and will be situated 150 metres to the east of the existing ferry terminal.

Phil Gadd, manager of Portsmouth ferry port, said: "It is exciting seeing such change taking place at the port and it is reassuring that everything is currently on schedule and that foundations for the new building will be put down soon.

"Over the last six months a number of enabling works have been taking place to resurface a large area, demolish existing buildings and relocate workshops. We look forward to seeing the building being constructed in the future."

Portsmouth is described by its managers as "Britain's best-connected ferry port".

Travellers heading to France can catch ferries to Le Havre from Portsmouth with LD Lines, while those visiting the Isle of Wight can use the Fishbourne and Ryde ferry services provided by Wightlink.

Brittany Ferries offers services to Cherbourg, Caen, St Malo and Santander from the British port.
