Record numbers of trucks transported on Scandlines routes

Record numbers of trucks transported on Scandlines routes in 2005

Considerable growth particularly on the lines to and from Scandinavia due to greatly increased traffic from the new EU Member States

"The Scandlines shipping line achieved substantial growth in the transport of trucks in 2005. For the first time in Scandlines' history, we carried more than 1 million trucks on our route network across the Baltic Sea. This corresponds to a growth of 5.5% compared with the previous year", reported CEO Uwe Bakosch.

Transport between Germany and Denmark/Sweden, in particular, is running better than ever. The growth is led by the Rostock-Gedser service, which transported around 86,400 trucks, i.e. 21.8% more than in 2004.

The Rostock-Trelleborg line was used by 133,000 trucks and trailers, representing an increase of 13.1%. Never before have so many trucks been carried on these routes. The effects can be seen here of the improved conditions at the Port of Rostock in its capacity as the Scandlines hub for Baltic Sea transport consignments to Denmark, Sweden and the Baltic States with the highway link to the A1 in Lübeck as well as the link to Eastern Europe via the new A20 to the East.

The Puttgarden-Rodby and Sassnitz-Trelleborg services also experienced good growth in the truck transport segment.

Scandlines expects further growth on the ferry lines between Germany and Scandinavia over the coming years. The reasons for this assumption include the continuing economic upturn in Eastern Europe, further expansion of the transport infrastructure in the hinterland areas of the Baltic ports, as well as the completion of the second link with the Island of Rügen scheduled for 2007. This will considerably increase capacity on the approach to the Sassnitz Ferry Port.

Car traffic

The high level of the previous year was more or less maintained with a total of 4.2 million cars carried on all routes together. There was substantial growth in this segment on the routes between Germany and Denmark, with 8.5% more cars carried on the Rostock-Gedser line than in the previous year and 2.4% more on the Puttgarden-Rodby service, for example.

The increase on the Puttgarden-Rodby service can be ascribed mainly to day trippers coming to Germany as well as the fitting of additional car decks. This measure resulted in next to no capacity bottlenecks during the summer months - despite renewed record numbers of vehicles.

This positive development is countered somewhat by the decline in transport figures on the Helsingor-Helsingborg route, which is presently losing traffic to the Oresund Bridge.

The fall in passenger numbers on the Sassnitz-Trelleborg line was caused mainly by the loss of Swedish shopping tourists opting to use the Oresund Bridge because of more favourable conditions for shoppers in Denmark. However, it proved possible to compensate for the greatest part of these losses through the positive development in passenger numbers on the Rostock-Trelleborg route.

The total number of passengers transported fell by 1.9%, but remains at around 20 million. The development in passenger numbers corresponds essentially to the developments in the car segment.

Transport development on the three routes within Denmark was also positive with total growth of 0.8% for cars and 0.2% for the truck segment. Only the Spodsbjerg-Taars service experienced a slight downturn in the numbers of cars and trucks carried as a result of reduced prices on the bridge link across the Great Belt.

In contrast, sea transport between Germany and the Baltic States has been subjected to tough competition from road transport via Poland since EU enlargement. Scandlines reorganised its ferry services to the Baltic States in October 2005, concentrating them on the Port of Ventspils (Latvia) with the aim of creating a strong transport hub. Scandlines has also set up its own cargo sector sales team in Latvia. The first positive effects of the initiated measures can already be felt.

"All in all, Scandlines can look back on a successful 2005 business year, with the transport results remaining at the high level of the preceding years", says Uwe Bakosch.
