Travellers who want to take an overseas break without having a damaging effect on the environment could consider visiting Rotterdam, which is one of Europe's "greenest cities", according to
P&O Ferries.
Writing in a blog for the company, Tomas Mowlam revealed that Rotterdam has a range of environmental credentials, including a comprehensive public transport network.
There are a total of 28 bus lines running throughout the city, as well as nine tram routes and two subway services.
Two new electric buses were recently introduced which can run for over 14 hours on a single charge.
Visitors who would prefer to travel under their own steam can hire a bike from one of the numerous stands around the city and make use of the extensive network of cycle paths.
Mr Mowlam also pointed out that Rotterdam is home to a number of markets where visitors can buy good value, locally sourced food.
Travellers can take
ferries from Hull to Rotterdam with
P&O Ferries, which also operates crossings on the
Dover to Calais ferry route.
Stena Line offers
ferries from Harwich to Hook of Holland, while
DFDS Seaways sails from Newcastle to Amsterdam.
