STX Finland starts building second ship for P&O Ferries | | | | 11 December 2009 | Shipbuilder STX Finland has announced the beginning of construction work on the second of two new vessels being built for P&O Ferries.
Production of the car and passenger ferry officially commenced on December 8th, with machines being switched on at midday to cut the first steel plates.
Both vessels being constructed by STX Finland will be used by P&O Ferries on the Dover to Calais ferry route.
The first ship, which is due to be completed next year, is currently under construction at the company's dry dock at the Rauma shipyard.
Project manager Markku Uusitalo said: "In the coming winter, Rauma shipyard will engage in the hull construction and outfitting work of the first vessel. According to plans, the first vessel will be launched in May 2010.
"An adequate share of blocks for the second vessel, whose production has just been started, will be completed to enable us to lay down the keel in May 2010, as soon as the first vessel has been launched."
P&O Ferries will be able to transport 195 cars and 1,750 passengers on each of its new ships.
In addition to its cross channel service, the company operates ferries to Dublin from Liverpool and a Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry route.
