San Sebastian 'ideal for a romantic trip'

People looking for a romantic break on the continent may find catching ferries from Portsmouth to Santander is a good way to start.

San Sebastian lies to the east along the Bay of Biscay coast and a visit here is ideal for a getaway with a loved one, according to a spokesperson from the press department of San Sebastian Turismo.

The spokesperson said: "San Sebastian is the perfect destination for a romantic break with your partner, as the city [has an abundance] of hotels, restaurants and other places full of charm. Couples will find numerous options to take a break, relax and enjoy the beauty that this city offers."

Top tips include enjoying the Thalassotherapy Centre, where people can be pampered while enjoying "stunning views" over the sea.

Another suggestion was that people enjoy the culture of the town, which includes the International Film Festival, Zinemaldia, an event run along the same lines as its equivalents in Venice and Cannes.

In addition to this, there are many concerts, exhibitions and festivals of various kinds going on, the expert said.

Being located close to the border with France, those staying in the area may also venture into the neighbouring country, or experience the mountain scenery of the Pyrenees.

Couples travelling with Brittany Ferries may enjoy a cosy overnight cabin stay as they sail across the English Channel and Bay of Biscay.

One activity those visiting northern Spain may particularly relish is its culinary excellence, according to Spanish food expert Maria Jose Sevilla.

She said the seafood of the region is a particular delight, with the best dish being monkfish fried with a bit of egg in olive oil, a dish that is "difficult to match" for flavour.

And those visiting Navarra will find the vegetables of the area to be among the world's finest, Ms Sevilla insisted.
