British travellers see the west coast of Scotland as the perfect destination for a UK island break, according to a new survey.
Some 14 per cent of the people polled by YouGov said Scotland's Western Isles - a group that includes Arran, Skye and Islay - would be their location of choice for an island getaway.
Travellers interested in visiting western Scotland can catch
ferries from Belfast to Stranraer with
Stena Line or sail from Larne to Troon with P&O Ferries.
David Else, coordinating author of a new Lonely Planet guide to Great Britain, said: "The islands are described in our new guide as a great area to visit so we're really pleased that they are getting the recognition that they deserve.
"With more Brits holidaying at home this year and many people keen to try somewhere off the beaten track, these islands' popularity may be about to take off."
Nearly a third (32 per cent) of the people surveyed said that the Scottish islands in general would be their ideal destination for a break in the UK.
The Shetland and Orkney islands can be reached by catching ferries from Aberdeen to Lerwick or sailing from Scrabster to Stromness with NorthLink Ferries.
