Cheap ferries to Scotland could prove a tempting option for golf enthusiasts this year following the country's recent win at the Today's Golfer magazine industry awards for 2009.
According to VisitScotland, the country was named the best golf destination for 2009 ahead of Ireland, another popular ferry travel destination, and the Algarve.
Malcolm Roughead OBE, director of visitor engagement at the tourism agency, said that Scotland offers a golfing experience that "cannot be found anywhere else in the world".
He added: "With the return of the Open Championship to Turnberry this year in July it is extremely important for us to capitalise on the opportunity this presents to promote Scotland as the no 1 golfing destination."
People interested in seeing the Open Championship this year can sail from Belfast to Stranraer with Stena Line for a short drive along the coast to the Ailsa Course in Turnberry.
The event will be held from July 16th to 19th following the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond near Glasgow earlier in the month.
Golf fans can also travel with P&O Ferries from Larne to Troon or Cairnryan to visit one of the 550 golf courses across Scotland, many of which are located in the Ayrshire region in the south-west.
