Having interrupted cross-Channel services for 5 days SeaFrance has announced that the strike has ended and all sailings resumed at 08:15 this morning. The strike began on Friday (2nd April) as CFDT union members walked out in a dispute over new working practises put in place as part of new financial plan by management, forcing the cancellation of all services.
SeaFrance "profusely apologised" to those who had been affected by the strike which has cost the company an estimated £1m in what is traditionally one of the busiest weekends of the year for ferry operators. Pierre Fa, the chairman of the French ferry operator, said; "We were expecting 58,000 passengers for the Easter weekend and we have only been able to carry 4,000 of them". SeaFrance's three ferries, which normally provide 19 crossings a day, were stuck in Calais port for the duration of the strike and passengers on its Dover-Calais ferry service were found alternative sailings with P&O Ferries.
