Self-drive ski holidays 'becoming more popular' | | | | 12 November 2008 | Winter sports trips are bucking a trend of falling holiday bookings, partly due to the savings offered by self-drive ski holidays, according to reports.
Figures cited by Travel Daily News show that bookings for snowboarding and ski holidays are currently up ten per cent on this time last year.
The statistics show that ski breaks in the Alps are gaining popularity at the expense of winter sport holidays in America, which also suggests that the option of driving to a European resort is currently a big advantage for British consumers.
Michael Broom Smith of chalet accommodation provider Purple Ski said: "Many of our guests spend all year looking forward to their holiday in the mountains and it seems that even in the current economic climate they will not be denied their week on the slopes."
He added: "Driving works out much more economical than flying, when you put four people and skis in a car."
People planning self-drive ski holidays to France can start their journey by catching cross-Channel ferries to ports in the north of the country, such as Calais, Dunkerque or Le Havre.
Regular ferry crossings are provided by major operators including P&O Ferries, SeaFrance and LD Lines. |
