Skiers urged to remember insurance | | | | 24 October 2008 | People planning ski holidays have been reminded of the importance of having insurance to cover the various problems that can occur during winter sports trips.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), said that insurance is "as important as your suitcase" for travellers.
While a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is essential for people taking ski holidays or any other trips on the continent, Mr Trudgill said that it is important to have the extra protection of travel insurance.
"You can't rely on your EHIC because it only covers the basic reciprocal health. If you are going on a skiing holiday or something you'll find all the medical centres on the slopes are private ones so you couldn't use EHIC," the Biba spokesman said.
"Your main areas of cover that you get under your travel insurance are: your baggage, your medical costs, your cancellation if you break your leg before going on holiday as well as your liability, so if you are skiing and you hit someone then you are going to pay for any costs that you caused in injuring somebody else."
Mr Trudgill also claimed that travel insurance is an affordable option, pointing out that packages are available for around £14 for a week in Europe.
According to recent research by American Express, a quarter of people are planning to take a holiday in the next year without travel insurance. |
