Spain offers the best value for holidaymakers going on a self-catering trip, new research has indicated.
The Post Office Self Catering on a Shoestring Report 2012 has identified the country as costing less than any other destination.
It means those catching ferries form Plymouth to Santander will be among those who can take advantage of the low cost of holidaying in the country.
The study showed that Spain contains three of the four best value supermarket shops in Europe.
Self catering is an option many holidaymakers will consider alongside ferry travel as a way of still being able to go abroad and experience sunny weather, a different culture and meet new people.
Earlier this week, a survey for homes rental website pureholidayhomes.com indicated a rising number of people all over Europe are opting for self-catering trips when they go abroad.
It showed 36 per cent want to do this, with chief executive at the firm Sean Collins stating: "There is no doubt booking a self catered holiday provides far better value for money for a family than a hotel."
