Ferry breaks and other trips in the UK could prove a popular option with so-called 'staycationers' this year, who will be taking domestic holidays to avoid the cost and stress of flying overseas, according to Lonely Planet.
The travel guide publisher - which has released a new book on travel opportunities in Britain - said that the number of people planning an escape within the UK is "soaring".
David Else, coordinating author of the new guidebook, said: "Staycationers can't afford all the costs associated with holidaying abroad, especially in light of the eurozone being so expensive, and have realised that they can find better value at home.
"Many are also keen to avoid security queues and delays at airports or are interested in keeping their carbon footprint down by avoiding flying."
Travel options for 'staycationers' include
Stena Line's
ferries from Stranraer to Belfast and from Fleetwood to Larne, which offer the chance to explore Northern Ireland.
The Orkney and Shetland islands represent another option for domestic travellers and are served by regular ferries to Stromness and Lerwick.
