Steam Packet Company names newest ship | | | | 11 November 2008 | The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has announced that its newest ship has been named Manannan, after the Celtic god of the sea and the protector of the Isle of Man.
Selected following a competition launched on the company chief executive's blog, the name is reflective of the company's desire to "focus on its Manx heritage".
The new ship is a 96-metre catamaran that was purchased in Tasmania and embarked on a month-long, 11,868-mile trip to Britain in July.
Currently undergoing a major refit and refurbishment, the vessel is set to enter service next year in place of Viking on the Steam Packet Company's ferry route between Douglas and Liverpool.
Mark Woodward, the company's chief executive, said: "Manannan, while not a traditional Steam Packet name, is nevertheless clearly identifiable with the Isle of Man and reinforces the vital lifeline relationship between the company and the island.
"This is a major step forward for us and a significant investment for the future. Everyone at the company is looking forward to seeing Manannan when she finally arrives in Manx waters in her new livery."
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company operates regular ferry crossings connecting the port of Douglas to Heysham, Liverpool, Belfast and Dublin. |
