Steam Packet flagship completes decade of service | | | | 21 July 2008 | Ben-my-Chree, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company's flagship, has this month celebrated the completion of its first decade of service in the Irish Sea.
The vessel first entered Manx waters on Tynwald Day the national day of the Isle of Man in 1998 and has since completed 14,000 sailings, covering more than 800,000 miles with a reliability rating of close to 100 per cent.
Ben-my-Chree was built by Van Der Giessen de Noord in Rotterdam at a cost of £24 million and four years ago received a £2 million overhaul of her passenger accommodation and facilities.
Steam Packet Company chief executive Mark Woodward said: "The Ben is, without question, the most reliable ship ever used by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company in its 178-year history.
"She has also been the most intensively used vessel in our history and has carried more than two million passengers in the last decade."
Ben-my-Chree is the sixth vessel in the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company's history to bear the name.
The ferry operator offers crossings to the Isle of Man from Liverpool, Heysham, Belfast and Dublin. |
