Stena Line has revealed that it carried more passengers with bikes to Holland in the first five months of the year during the build-up to the Tour de France.
The number of cyclists taking
ferries from Harwich to Hook of Holland with the company between January and May was 46 per cent higher this year than in 2009.
One of the main reasons behind the trend is the excitement surrounding British participation in the Tour de France, according to
Stena Line.
The famous cycling contest, which got underway in Rotterdam on July 3rd, includes a UK team for the first time this year.
Stena Line revealed that its sailings on the Harwich to Hook of Holland ferry route on July 2nd were at 80 per cent capacity.
There were 55 bicycles booked on the overnight crossing, compared to 14 on the same day last year.
People hoping to see some of the forthcoming stages of the Tour de France can reach the host country by taking
ferries from Portsmouth to Le Havre with
LD Lines or travelling on the
Dover to Calais ferry route with
SeaFrance or
P&O.
The race will reach its climax in Paris on July 25th.
