Stena Line has revealed that the forthcoming summer is "shaping up to be a record one", partly as a result of the recent volcanic ash crisis and its effect on travel plans.
The ferry company has already seen a substantial rise in demand for its Irish Sea services, with advance sales for June and July up 15 per cent from the same period last year.
Travellers can take
ferries from Holyhead to Dublin and Dun Laoghaire with Stena Line, which also operates a Fishguard to Rosslare ferry service.
An extra 50,000 passengers are expected to use these routes this summer.
Ian Baillie, the ferry operator's marketing manager, said: "I suppose it would be fair to say that we have been one of the few benefactors from the chaos caused by the ash cloud disruptions.
"Undoubtedly people have travelled with us who would not have done so or have not done so for many years, yet the one common factor to all has been the level of surprise about just how much ferry travel has changed."
During the spring period, Stena Line carried an additional 60,000 passengers between Britain and Ireland.
The company also serves mainland Europe with its
ferries from Harwich to Hook of Holland.
