The Scottish government has welcomed the announcement that
Stena Line is to relocate its current Belfast to Stranraer ferry service to the port of Loch Ryan.
Set to open in October next year, the new terminal will reduce the duration of ferry crossings between Belfast and Scotland by 25 minutes.
Scottish first minister Alex Salmond said
Stena Line's £200 million Loch Ryan port project will create hundreds of new jobs and boost investment in Dumfries and Galloway.
He added: "The relocation of the port to the new Loch Ryan port will also aid tourism with faster crossings between Scotland and Northern Ireland and help the regeneration of Stranraer as a major marine leisure area."
Stena Line chairman Dan Sten Olsson said: "The investment we have announced will provide Scotland with a first class port facility which underlines and enhances the port's prominence as the third largest gateway in the UK."
The port of Loch Ryan is located close to Cairnryan, which is currently served by P&O Ferries from Larne in Northern Ireland.
