Stena Line is seeking planning permission to start work on a new passenger ferry terminal in south-west Scotland.
The company is intending to move its operations from Stranraer to a new port at Old House Point near Cairnryan.
If the multi-million pound project comes to fruition, it could prove beneficial to ferry passengers as it would cut journey times between south-west Scotland and Belfast.
A Stena Line spokesman confirmed that the company was making a planning application to Dumfries and Galloway Council with regards to the necessary ground works for the development.
Speaking to the Scotsman, he added: "Work on an environmental impact study for the area is also being carried out."
If the ferry operator's plans run smoothly, the new terminal could be up and running by autumn 2010.
The existing Stena Line crossing between Stranraer and Belfast is one of a number of Irish Sea services operated by the company, with other routes linking Fishguard to Rosslare, Fleetwood to Larne and Holyhead to Dublin.
