An announcement is expected from
Stena Line regarding its Stranraer to Belfast ferry route.
The company is thought to be planning a move from Stranraer to Cairnryan, a port located further north along the west coast of Scotland, BBC News reported.
Passengers are set to benefit from shorter crossings between Scotland and Northern Ireland following the move, while the company will be able to reduce its fuel usage.
The development could also have positive ramifications for Stranraer, with local authorities able to proceed with a project to improve the town's waterfront.
If the move is confirmed by
Stena Line, the company will share the port of Cairnryan with P&O Ferries, which currently operates a Larne ferry service from the Scottish location.
Stena Line first indicated that it was considering leaving Stranraer in February 2003, according to BBC News.
The company also provides access to the Republic of Ireland with its Holyhead to Dublin ferry route, along with regular ferries to Rosslare from Fishguard.
