Travellers planning to take ferries to France over the coming weeks will have the opportunity to pay their respects to the people who lost their lives during the two world wars.
The Alsace Tourist Board described the Alsace-Moselle memorial at Schirmeck, south-west of Strasbourg, as "one of the most poignant reminders of European
conflicts that have taken place during the last 140 years".
People who would like to pay tribute to those who died can take
ferries to France and head to the memorial as Remembrance Day (November 11th) approaches.
Both
P&O and
SeaFrance provide access to eastern France via the
Dover to Calais ferry route, while
Norfolkline/
DFDS Seaways operates
ferries from Dover to Dunkerque.
The Alsace-Moselle memorial is located on a site overlooking what was once a Nazi internment camp.
Many other places in the region commemorate the people who lost their lives in the world wars, such as the Linge battlefield in the Vosges mountains and medieval villages like Kaysersberg, Ammerschwihr and Kientzheim.
Travellers planning a trip to France also have the option of taking
ferries from Portsmouth to Le Havre or sailing from Dover to Boulogne with
LD Lines.
