Spring is on its way, which means the bulb fields of Holland will soon be in bloom.
Ferry travellers can take in the intoxicating sights and smells of thousands of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths growing in perfectly formed rows.
The bulb fields season tends to begin around the end of March until the second week of May, although the best time to visit is said to be the second half of April.
According to the official tourism board for Holland, the best place to see these spectacular floral displays is behind the North Sea dines between the cities of Leiden and Den Helder.
"Other bulb fields, just as lovely, are situated near Enkhuizen and in the province of Flevoland," it adds.
"Walking, cycling and car routes are available from the local tourist information offices in the bulb field regions."
Ferries to Holland are available from the UK ports of Newcastle, Hull and Harwich.
Stena Line sails from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, while
P&O Ferries operates crossings from Hull to Rotterdam and
DFDS Seaways runs ferries from Newcastle to IJmuiden.
