Ferries to Amsterdam could prove an interesting option for people considering affordable breaks, with Daily Telegraph writer Fred Mawer recently spending a weekend in the city for less than £250.
The newspaper pointed out that one way of reaching the Dutch capital is by taking ferries to Hook of Holland from Harwich with
Stena Line, which depart from the UK twice a day.
According to Mr Mawer, walking along the canals of Amsterdam and admiring the city's "old, gabled buildings" is one of the "greatest pleasures" of a visit to the destination and also has the advantage of being free.
Travellers hoping to stick to a budget were advised to start their trip with a visit to some of the Dutch capital's free sights, such as the Civic Guards Gallery at the Historisch Museum and the Begijnhof courtyard.
There is also free entertainment on offer at the Concertgebouw on Wednesday lunchtimes, with short classical concerts being performed at 12:30.
Art lovers will be prepared to pay to visit some of Amsterdam's most popular attractions, such as the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, both of which boast large and prestigious collections.
People interested in visiting the city can catch ferries to Amsterdam from Newcastle with
DFDS Seaways, while P&O Ferries provides a link to Holland with its Hull to Rotterdam ferry service.
