Ferries to Spain could prove increasingly popular among football fans this month when the new La Liga season gets underway.
Barcelona are the reigning Spanish champions, but they will be expecting strong competition this season from Real Madrid, who have invested hundreds of millions of euros in players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka this summer.
The title holders will play their first game of the 2009-10 season against Sporting Gijon on August 31st.
Travellers planning to catch ferries to Bilbao from Portsmouth with P&O Ferries will be able to see local side Athletic Bilbao play Espanyol at home on August 30th, followed by Villarreal on September 20th.
Another travel option is the Santander ferry route served by
Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth and Plymouth.
Racing Santander's home fixtures will see them take on Getafe on August 30th and Barcelona on September 23rd.
Holidaymakers may be interested in extending their tour of Spain by catching ferries to the Balearic Island destinations of Palma, Mahon or Ibiza with
Balearia,
Iscomar or
Trasmediterranea.
