Travellers planning to catch ferries to France for their summer holiday this year have been encouraged to visit some of the Pays de la Loire region's big cities.
According to the local tourist board, the capital of each department of the Pays de la Loire has its own character and a unique collection of sights and attractions.
People interested in visiting the region can catch ferries to St Malo from Portsmouth or sail to Roscoff from Plymouth with
Brittany Ferries.
A short drive south will bring holidaymakers to the city of Nantes, which harks back to centuries gone by with its stone-paved lanes, historic houses and an opera house that dates back to the 1700s.
Angers boasts a rich heritage, with attractions including the 107-metre-long Apocalypse tapestry and a 12th century cathedral. The city is home to restaurants, shops and a student population that ensure it also has a modern appeal.
Visitors looking to experience the rural side of the Pays de la Loire can head to Laval and Cholet, while those with an interest in motorsport may be tempted to head to Le Mans, home of the famous 24-hour race.
In addition to the
Brittany Ferries services, people planning to visit France can catch ferries to Le Havre from Portsmouth with LD Lines or use the operator's Dover to Dieppe ferry route.
