Take the Ferry and Go Green | | | | 22 July 2008 | | Source: gotravelinsurance.co.uk | ferry travel is increasing in popularity as Britons look for more environmentally friendly ways to holiday, it has been claimed.
Derek Moore, chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators, said that holidaymakers are increasingly looking for alternatives to plane travel and added that ferry transport can also represent good value for money.
"Despite the current strength of the euro against the pound, many holidaymakers are staying closer to home and taking a ferry is a convenient and cost-effective way to get to the continent," he explained.
According to figures from the Passenger Shipping Association, 40 million passengers are transported by ferry every year, with cruises also proving popular.
Mr Moore added that children view boat travel as a particularly exciting mode of transport and suggested that ferry trips are often seen as part of the holiday itself.
