Transmanche: Lets stop the sillyness from before the local elections
The members of the Port Development Committee met last week to draw up their report after nine months of management by the Syndicat Mixte of the port of Dieppe. Among which, the future of the cross-Channel link was brought up not without expressing worries about the Newhaven-Dieppe route, figures available.
These outraged Pierre Géhanne, managing director of Louis Dreyfus Armateurs: "These figures far from reflect the reality and I have noticed that once again they have given the LD Lines telephone number for further information.It is common knowledge that the figures are on the up, 3.3% extra for passenger numbers and 6.6% extra for vehicle numbers, from January to August".
Comments on the competition of the Newhaven-LeHavre route also upset him, "They are really silly. It is a route that works well, but that costs us 600 000 Euros a year. What do they want? To cancel the route?"
And to lose his temper because of what he describes as "sillyness from before the local elections".
Pierre Géhanne gladly recognises there are still concerns about the freight but he explains that: "the 2006 figures were simply inflated. even bicycles were found in the figures! Not to mention Spanish carriers that came through Dieppe but never paid because the invoices were only payable 3 months later".
The Newhaven-Le Havre route is there in his eyes, " so that the conseil général has to pay less of a grant, so the money saved can then be used on other projects".
All that remains is the future of the port of Newhaven: "For sure it is in a sad state, the conseil général is in negociation with an English group about it. We will also be investing in new facilities to welcome motorists with, as they are currently unsavoury!"
