Trasmediterranea ceases Denia-Ibiza crossings
A leading ferry company has announced its intention to pull out of the port of Denia after just a season in the town. Acciona-Trasmediterranea has decided to stop running crossings to the Balearic islands from Denia and is concentrating its efforts on the ports of Alicante and Valencia. After a disappointing Easter, the fast-ferry company company was expecting an
early-summer glut of passengers. However, customers have continued to be thin on the ground.
Sources close to the company say the decision was partially provoked by the perceived lack of infrastructure, facilities and services in the port of Denia, although the strong competition from rival fast-cat firm Iscomar and also Balearia, which has a near-monopoly given that it runs the only conventional ferry connection, is also said to be a significant influencing
factor.
At the same time as the move to cease crossings from Denia was revealed, rumours began to circulate that the naval division of Trasmediterranea was up for sale as a going concern with favourable results for its services in the Strait of Gibraltar but that its Balearic crossings
were not proving lucrative.
Last Wednesday, a press-release revealed that Acciona-Trasmediterranea offered seats for12,000 passengers a day on its island crossings from Barcelona , Alicante and Valencia in lieu of those from Denia.
Revamp works to the port of Denia have recently been approved with a budget of 12 million euros and will be completed by 2008, say the port authorities. A new building to provide a departure and arrivals lounge for ferry passengers is on the cards. At present customers have to wait on foot in the open air.
